What you should expect from your Hypnotherapy Sessions

If you have not experienced hypnotherapy before, or been disappointed by a previous therapeutic experience, it is worth considering what makes a good hypnotherapist. My professional body, the Corporation of Advanced Hypnotherapy have devised the Atkinson-Ball standard. Bill Atkinson-Ball founded the Corporation in the 1980s. I have discussed his contribution to the hypnotherapy profession, and what it means for you, the client, in another post.

I must give credit for most of this material to the Corporation of Advanced Hypnotherapy. To see the original go to http://advancedhypnotherapyregister.co.uk/standards I have adapted it in a few places in order to explain what I do having developed my work over thirteen years of practise.

When you first telephone me.

  • I aim to be friendly and approachable.
  • I am interested in helping you.
  • I seek to understand the nature of your problem.

I will explain what happens in your first consultation and arrange for you to attend one if that is what you would like to do.

When you attend your first consultation I aim to:

  • Have a professional manner and appearance.
  • Provide a comfortable environment.
  • Help you feel at ease.
  • Give you the chance to tell me about the problem you want to address.
  • Give you a simple explanation of hypnosis and hypnotherapy and how it can help you.
  • Answer your questions and clear up any misunderstandings.
  • Give you an idea of how many sessions might be required.

I will then go on to:

  • Show you some powerful Psy-TaP (Psychosensory Techniques and Principles) practical techniques which can reduce unpleasant emotional and behavioural symptoms.
  • Describe what you can expect from your first experience of hypnotic relaxation.
  • Guide you into hypnosis and give you beneficial suggestions in order to start the therapeutic process.
  • Discuss your experience and answer any questions.
  • After the session provide you with a personal, tailored recording designed to address your particular requirements so that you can carry on the work at home.

During  subsequent sessions (in most cases, Advanced Hypnotherapists take between 2 and 5 sessions to complete the work) I will:

  • Ask you for feedback on how the work is progressing.
  • Address any concerns you may have.
  • Agree with you what we will be working on during the session and explaining in general terms what we will be doing.
  • Help you into hypnosis quickly and help you deepen that hypnosis.
  • Help you work with your subconscious mind directly, or employ a therapeutic technique determined by your specific needs.
  • Ensure that the work is carried out in a manner that is comfortable for you.
  • Make sure the work is complete before ending the session.
  • Discuss progress and deal with any questions.

During the final session I will:

  • Ask you for feedback on how the work is progressing.
  • Address any concerns you may have.
  • Agree with you what area we need to concentrate on in order to complete the work.
  • Check that the work is complete.
  • Deal with any remaining questions.
  • Arrange to follow up in a few weeks.
